What’s the role? 

This role manages a variety of divergent editorial activities for news programs in Melbourne with a focus on breaking news and generating unique news content. Using your strong editorial judgement, this role provides editorial direction to the Melbourne team ensuring all content is timely and of a high standard.

  • Planning and resourcing coverage of Victoria news events in consultation with the News  Editor and Head of News.   
  • Liaising with Sky News and Melbourne News Corp Editors / Publicity to generate cross-platform content. 
  • Leading Melbourne based staff and overseeing rostering arrangements.
  • Ensuring content meets legal requirements and legal advice is passed on to relevant editorial staff.
  • Ensuring editorial staff comply with WHS requirements during breaking news and special coverage.
  • Ensuring editorial staff complete and comply with all News Corp and ANC policies. 
  • Developing and maintaining a relationship with other news networks (Channels 7, 9, ABC, SBS and 10) to ensure coverage of all new stories and press conferences is delivered.
  • On-call 24/7 to respond to breaking news events, rostering issues etc.  

Who you are

  • Journalism/publishing experience with local Melbourne knowledge would be highly regarded.
  • Strong managerial, organizational and communication skills as this role will be responsible for team rostering.
  • At least 10 years of newsroom experience, coupled with relevant tertiary qualifications. 
  • Experience managing editorial staff in a newsroom environment. 
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to multitask. 
  • Knowledge of production techniques and systems, including ENPS, Mosart and Quantel ideal but not essential.
